They function by manually shifting through the different sizes of gears to transmit the power and speed to the tyres. Such gears are engaged by pressing in the clutch which pulls the gear away from the engine. Consequently, it is now possible to shift to a new gear, then releasing the clutch so that it is engaged.
Automatic transmissions shift gears when needed without human assistance. The shift between gears is performed when the vehicle reaches pre-designated speeds. This allows the power requirements of maintaining speed when ascending or descending over terrain which requires changes in the torque.
How Automatic Transmissions Work
The automatic transmission works by taking the power from the engine through the torque converter. The power is then sent to the turbine via the transmission fluid. Thus, the fluid in the turbine is returned to the pump via the stator.
The stator is what increases the power in the auto transmission fluid. This then in turn increases the rotation of vortex power found within the torque converter.
When the turbine spins, so does the shaft which connects to the planetary gears. The gears will move faster or slower depending on the power supplied through the engine. When the power reaches pre-set levels, a different gear is engaged to deliver that power at maximum efficiency.
